The Melbourne Mint, is considered to be the Mother Mint of the Royal Australian Mint, as much of the latter's expertise in and knowledge of minting emanated from the Melbourne Mint. On the reverse of the coin are two gold cameos of the Shield and St George designs that featured on the first sovereigns produced by the Melbourne Mint in 1872.
