The pencil is stored on the side (it is somewhat hard to take out). When you remove the pencil, the light turns on. I don't have a battery on hand to test it. It requires a special European battery that should be available at a camera shop. It is in good condition; there is some corrosion in the battery compartment. It measures about 6" by 3
